September 11, 2001, a day no one will ever forget. While everyone else ran out, the FDNY ran into those burning buildings without hesitation, risking their lives in service of others. We can never truly thank our FDNY members for what they did that day and in the weeks and months that followed. We remember the courage and dedication of those FDNY members who stopped at nothing to save countless lives.
So much has changed in the past 25 years since that fateful day. For the FDNY, this meant rebuilding after losing 343 members and hundreds of members who have since passed of 9/11 related illnesses. The images of exhausted and grieving FDNY members who searched tirelessly to recover the 343 FDNY members is etched in the history of New York City.
The extraordinary legacy of those the FDNY lost that day and continue to lose is deeply personal for the FDNY and the FDNY Foundation. From funding a memorial wall at FDNY Headquarters to launching the Never Forget Memorial Scholarships to support current Department members, the Foundation continues to help the FDNY carry on the legacies of the fallen.
The FDNY Foundation is grateful to our friends who stood by the FDNY through the tragedy of September 11. It has taken the FDNY many years to rebuild after 9/11, but thanks to the generosity of our friends and supporters, the Department continues to remain the greatest Fire Department in the world!
Each year, we return to the memories of that day and the time afterwards while our City and the Department worked to rebuild. Today, the FDNY is stronger and more resilient than ever. Since 9/11, the FDNY has placed training at the forefront of public safety in New York City, while simultaneously setting standards for the nation. Your support continues to help the FDNY participate in specialized courses, technical training programs and curriculum centered on disaster readiness.
The FDNY Foundation and our Board of Directors remember those that we lost and continue to lose. We thank the men and women of the FDNY who continue to carry on the legacies of the fallen by serving with unwavering dedication and unmatched heroism.
