Foundation Joins FDNY to Mark the 16th Anniversary of Sept. 11th Attacks

The FDNY Foundation marks the 16th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks alongside the FDNY, who lost 343 members that day.

Members of the Department attend ceremonies across the city to honor those who made the Supreme Sacrifice that day, including the annual reading of the names at the 9/11 Memorial.

“Our tireless work to ensure the Department is better trained, better prepared and better equipped than ever before honors the lives and legacies of the 343 members of the FDNY who made the Supreme Sacrifice 16 years ago,” said FDNY Foundation Chairman Stephen Ruzow.

The 343 members of the FDNY who died on Sept. 11, 2001 had more than 4,400 years of experience between them. The Foundation honors their heroism and joins the FDNY to mark this solemn anniversary by funding ceremonies across the five boroughs on this anniversary each year, including the FDNY Memorial Service at St. Patrick’s Cathedral.

The FDNY added the names of 32 FDNY members who died of illnesses related to their work in the rescue and recovery effort at the World Trade Center to the FDNY World Trade Center Memorial Wall at FDNY Headquarters in Brooklyn.

The World Trade Memorial Wall now lists the names of 159 FDNY members who died of illnesses related to their work during and after the Sept. 11th attacks. The wall was unveiled in Sept. 2011.

Our tireless work to ensure the Department is better trained, better prepared and better equipped than ever before honors the lives and legacies of the 343 members of the FDNY who made the Supreme Sacrifice 16 years ago.
