The FDNY, in collaboration with the New York City Department for the Aging, released a new Public Service Announcement (PSA) offering older New Yorkers a new safety checklist to help keep them safe during fires and emergencies. Older adults (60 years or older) face higher risks of fire injuries and fatalities.
“It’s all of our jobs to help keep our older family members and neighbors safe. We urge everyone to check on loved ones, especially those who are older and may be living alone,” said FDNY Commissioner Lillian Bonsignore.
“New York City is home to nearly 1.8 million older adults. Supporting older New Yorkers’ ability to live safely is both a responsibility and a shared commitment. As we celebrate older New Yorkers this month we urge everyone to educate themselves on fire and life safety tips,” said NYC Department for the Aging Commissioner Dr. Lisa Scott-McKenzie.
Older adults should:
- Have working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.
- Create an escape plan and practice it.
- Close the door when escaping smoke and fire.
- Avoid overloading electrical outlets.
- Prepare a go folder with medications and emergency contacts.
- Know the signs stroke and heart attack.
- Stand by your pan when cooking.
- Where possible, charge and store micro mobility devices outside.
- Keep candles away from anything flammable.
- Avoid careless smoking habits and douse used butts in water.
