FDNY releases new PSA about the dangers of improper disposal of lithium-ion batteries

The FDNY, in collaboration with the New York City Department of Sanitation, released a new Public Service Announcement (PSA) on Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2026, reminding New Yorkers about the dangers of improperly disposing of lithium-ion batteries.

Putting lithium-ion batteries in the trash or recycling at home is illegal and dangerous. Recycle batteries by taking them to a Special Waste Drop-Off Site or a safe disposal event. For disposal instructions and more disposal options, go Here.

Be sure to individually bag batteries or tape ends before disposing of them.

The Department’s PSA program is made possible in part with support from the FDNY Foundation, the official nonprofit organization of the Department.
