FDNY Foundation Offers Behind-the-Scenes Look at Calendar of Heroes

When the FDNY Foundation unveiled the 2015 Calendar of Heroes in Times Square in July, it also made history.

This was the first year the calendar featured a female member of the FDNY.

Danae Mines is the first woman to make the pages of the calendar in its 11-year history. The 14-year veteran of the FDNY is a member of Engine Co. 60 in the South Bronx.

Mines joins 12 of her male colleagues in the pages of the calendar and thinks her month is fitting. “My month is March,” she said, “and I’m proud because March is Women’s History Month.”

“We are so proud of Danae Mines and all of the women of the FDNY,” said FDNY Foundation Executive Director Jean O’Shea. “And we are proud to be making history this way, by celebrating her accomplishments and all of the important accomplishments of the women of the Department with this fun annual tradition.”

Mines joined all of her fellow calendar models in Times Square to meet fans and sign copies of the calendar.

“Being the first female feels great,” said Mines. “I love being an inspiration for all women, all ages.”

The Calendar of Heroes is the only official calendar of the Fire Department. All proceeds from the sale of the calendar go directly to the FDNY Foundation to help fund important fire safety education initiatives, as well as provide professional development for FDNY members.
