FDNY Foundation Celebrates as FDNY Records First Month with Zero Fire-Related Deaths in Department History

The FDNY Foundation joins the FDNY in celebrating Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro’s announcement that the month of June 2015 was the first month on record in the 150-year history of the Department with zero fire fatalities.

“This achievement is a testament to the outstanding performance by our Firefighters, Paramedics and EMTs to quickly respond to fires and treat the injured, as well as the continuous support of the FDNY Foundation and its funding of many of our safety initiatives, including much of the work done by the Fire Safety Education Unit,” said Commissioner Nigro. “The historic reduction in fire-related deaths over the last several years clearly demonstrates the Department’s efforts are making a significant impact and saving lives in communities throughout the city.”

To date, there have been 29 fire-related deaths in 2015. During the last five years, fewer New Yorkers have died in fires than in any comparable five-year period since accurate record-keeping began in 1916.

The record high number of fire deaths in New York City was 310 in 1970.

“We are very proud to celebrate this historic month with the FDNY,” said FDNY Foundation Chairman Stephen Ruzow. It is our great privilege to support the critical, life-saving mission of the FDNY by funding so many of its fire safety education programs. As we mark historic achievements like this one, we can definitely see that these programs are working and we will continue to reach as many people as we can with messages of fire safety in hopes of continuing to save lives.”

“It is in great thanks to our supporters that we are able to fund so much of the fire safety education work done each and every day by members of the FDNY,” said FDNY Foundation Executive Director Jean O’Shea. “We mark this extraordinary milestone with every FDNY Firefighter, Paramedic and EMT, as well as with our friends who have, through their generosity, allowed us to continue to support this Department in its life-saving work.”
