On May 14-17, the FDNY Foundation and FDNY welcomed military, federal, state, and local medical first responders from the around the world to the FDNY Search & Rescue Field Medicine Symposium (SRFM) that took place at the FDNY Fire Academy on Randall’s Island.
Each year, the FDNY SRFM Symposium includes current hot topics, the latest medical technological updates, and recent case studies from around the world. The four days consisted of workshops, lectures, panel discussions, hands-on-skills scenarios, and a vendor showcase with the latest equipment and products.
“As Director of the FDNY Search & Rescue Field Medicine Symposium, I am incredibly proud of what this event has become. This year, we welcomed participants from 35 states and 9 countries, bringing together some of the most experienced and dedicated professionals in fire, EMS, rescue, law enforcement, military, and disaster medicine. The challenges we face today are increasingly complex, and no single agency can solve them alone. By creating an environment where responders can train together, share lessons learned, and discuss emerging best practices, we strengthen not only the FDNY, but the entire first responder community. The relationships built and knowledge exchanged during this symposium will ultimately translate into better preparedness, improved operational effectiveness, and enhanced patient care for the communities we all serve,” said FDNY Deputy Chief Medical Director Douglas Isaacs.
During pre-conference activities on May 14 and May 15, these first responders participated in a hands-on active threat scenario, a field blood transfusion workshop, learned about Advanced K-9 Veterinary Care and much more.
First responders from nine countries and 35 states attended the 2026 FDNY SRFM Symposium.
On Friday, May 15 we hosted a welcome reception to commemorate the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001.
“I am deeply grateful to FDNY leadership and the FDNY Foundation for their continued support of the FDNY Search & Rescue Field Medicine Symposium. This year’s symposium carried special significance as we commemorated the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001. For many of us, that day shaped our careers, strengthened our sense of purpose, and reinforced our commitment to serving others during their greatest times of need. Bringing together responders from 35 states and 9 countries to learn, train, and collaborate in New York City, a place forever connected to the sacrifices and lessons of 9/11, made this year’s event especially meaningful. The symposium served as a powerful reminder that the legacy of 9/11 extends far beyond remembrance. The lessons learned continue to influence how we prepare for, respond to, and recover from emergencies around the world. Through collaboration, innovation, and the sharing of knowledge and experience, we honor those who came before us while ensuring that future generations of responders are better prepared to meet the challenges ahead,” said Dr. Isaacs.
