Former New York Yankees legend Mariano Rivera joined the FDNY and the Hartford – a property and casualty insurance provider – to educate students at P.S. 63 Author’s Academy in the Bronx on Tues., June 6, and to deputize them as junior fire marshals.

The event took place as a part of The Hartford’s Junior Fire Marshal program, one of the country’s oldest corporate-sponsored public education programs.

“I’m honored to be partnering with The Hartford and its Junior Fire Marshal program to raise awareness about the importance of fire safety,” said Rivera. “The Bronx is a special place to me – it’s a community that has supported me throughout my career. I’m proud to be a part of an effort to educate children about how to prevent home fires and help keep this city and its residents safe.”

In addition to Junior Fire Marshal Day, the Hartford also donated $20,000 to the Bronx School District and the FDNY Foundation for fire safety education. The donation is a part of a commitment the company has made to donate $2 million and to educate 1.5 million children on fire prevention and safety.

“We are grateful for any opportunity to reach students in New York City with fire safety education,” said FDNY Foundation Board Chairman Stephen Ruzow. “We know that children are among the most vulnerable to fire and we know that by bringing this type of education into schools, organizations like the FDNY Foundation and the Hartford are potentially saving lives.”
