Foundation Joins FDNY to Remind New Yorkers to Change Their Clocks/Change Their Batteries

The FDNY and the FDNY Foundation are reminding New Yorkers to change the batteries in their smoke and carbon monoxide alarms when they change their clocks for the end of Daylight Saving Time on Nov. 1, 2015.

As a part of the outreach effort, members of the Foundation-funded FDNY Fire Safety Education Team are distributing 30,000 batteries, as well as electric candles and fire safety literature at more than a dozen locations throughout the five boroughs. The batteries were donated to the Foundation by Duracell.

“Two-thirds of all fatal fires in New York City occur in homes that do not have a working smoke alarm present,” said Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro. “Smoke alarms are life saving devices – and having a working smoke alarm dramatically increases your chance of survival from a fire.”

Events on Sat., Oct. 31 include:

  • Bronx: Classic Community Center at 286 East 156th Street, 4–7 PM
  • Bronx: Ms. Abbie’s Halloween Health Fair on Decatur Avenue between Fordham Road & East 193 Street, 11AM–3PM
  • Brooklyn: Owl’s Head Park at 67th Street & Colonial Road, 3–9PM
  • Manhattan: Silent Voices United, Inc. at St. Nicholas Ave. between West 116th & West 117 Streets 1–5PM
